Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday celebrated Assam’s rapid economic growth, announcing that the state’s economy has doubled in the last six years under the BJP government. Speaking at the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment & Infrastructure Summit 2025 in Guwahati, Modi emphasized the historical and future importance of Eastern India and the Northeast, predicting the region will play a vital role in India’s development journey.

“History is witness that Eastern India once had a massive role in India’s prosperity. As India moves forward, the Northeast is once again set to show its strength,” PM Modi said, calling the summit a key initiative to connect Assam’s potential with global opportunities.

Highlighting the state’s economic surge, the Prime Minister pointed out that Assam’s economy grew from approximately Rs 2.75 lakh crore in 2018 to Rs 6 lakh crore in 2024 — a twofold increase in six years. “This reflects the double effect of a double-engine government,” he said, referring to BJP’s governance at both the state and central levels.

Modi also stressed India’s growing global trade partnerships and infrastructure investments. “India is strengthening local supply chains and signing free trade agreements with various regions worldwide. The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor is opening new opportunities, and Assam stands to benefit from these global linkages,” he noted.

On infrastructure, PM Modi highlighted the government’s efforts in transforming Assam’s railway sector. “Between 2009 and 2014, Assam’s average railway budget was Rs 2,100 crore. Our government has quadrupled it to Rs 10,000 crore,” he stated.

The Advantage Assam 2.0 summit brings together industry leaders, investors, and policymakers, offering a platform to explore business opportunities in Assam’s growing industrial and infrastructure sectors. The event saw participation from top industrialists like Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, alongside Union Ministers Dr. S Jaishankar, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Sarbananda Sonowal.

As Assam continues on this upward trajectory, the state’s economic growth and infrastructure development are expected to set the stage for the Northeast’s rising prominence in India’s future progress.
